According to Electrive, the full hybrid version of the car, which debuted back in 1997, will be available outside the continent, but the PHEV model available here will have a system output of 164kW, which according to Toyota officials, will allow for "responsive acceleration".

The more detailed specifications reveal a 111kW 2.0 liter gasoline engine coupled with a 120kW electric motor that will also be mounted on the front axle.

Compared to the full hybrid version, the PHEV one has a 13.6kWh battery which is supposed to offer 50% more range in electric mode, enough "to be able to cover the majority of everyday journeys locally emission-free", according to the Japanese maker.

The lithium-ion battery, which is located under the rear seat, can be charged by wire or by an optional solar panel, but charging speed has not yet been disclosed.

Models sold outside Europe that are full hybrid will have either a 1.8 liter engine or a 2.0 liter one paired with an electric motor and will have a total output of 144kW.

Toyota kept the same iconic shape of the car, which is for aerodynamic purposes, officials say, but the overall exterior design has been simplified compared to other recent Toyota models.

The new 5th generation Prius PHEV will be making its way to European countries starting mid-2023, although prices have not yet been disclosed.
