Electrive writes that the goal of the German carmaker is to sell only battery-powered vehicles in Europe, as per the CEO of the Volkswagen brand.

He also confirmed that the first purpose-built electric Golf model will be arriving on the market from 2028, when the new platform will also be manufactured, which means that no ID. Golf is planned before that date.

Thomas Schäfer said that this is because the battery-powered Golf model will incorporate a flat roof, similar to previous Golf generations, which is currently not possible with the company's MEB platform.

However, he stated that the electric Tiguan, which can come two years earlier, in 2026, can make use of the MEB+ platform, since it is a taller vehicle and it will be offered beside the ID.4.

The Volkswagen-brand CEO also talked about a potential Euro 7 Polo, which he says would be "almost as expensive as the production version of the ID. 2", which doesn't take the combustion car out of the equation, but points that it will struggle in an electric-dominant market.

Currently, the Golf 8 is expected to get an important facelift in the coming year, which means that we should not expect a Golf 9 before the end of the decade, according to Schäfer.

"If the world develops completely differently than expected by 2026 or 2027, then we can also launch another completely new vehicle. But I don’t think so. So far, that’s not planned."

Also, as far as new combustion engine models, the CEO says that "for the time being, the T-Roc is the last new combustion car in Europe that we see on the horizon."
