According to CNBC, Swedish startup Heart Aerospace will manufacture the electric planes needed for the transition.

United Airlines will receive 100 electric planes from the startup in which it invested throughout the past year.

Some of the other projects by which United plans to go fully electric include buying and using electric flying taxis, hydrogen-electric engines and vertical take-off aircraft.

Mike Leskinen, United Airlines Ventures president, stated that " we cannot continue doing and operating our business the way we do; it is imperative that we change it, and the way we’re going to change it is through investing in technology."

"Existing technology is going to either cause us to fly less, which is an unacceptable alternative, or continue with a carbon footprint, which we believe is equally unacceptable", Leskinen added.

Heart Aerospace recently redesigned its first electric plane which can carry as many as 30 passengers, which should go in service starting 2028.

The ES-30 battery-powered plane's range is rated by the manufacturer at about 200 kilometers, with the unit also having a hybrid engine running on SAF, which should allow for as much as 400 kilometers of range.

Leskinen said that "initially we want to fly on routes that are 321 km or less. But as that energy density increases, that same aircraft will have a range of 400-482 km, which is going to give us a lot more utility here connecting our hubs."

An important aspect of regional planes is recharging time, to which Heart Aerospace officials say shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes to juice up the batteries.
