According to CleanTehnica, there were 851.000 registrations for plug-ins in March, representing the second-best month ever and 15% of the global auto market.
Pure electric vehicles have a share of 11% of the car market on a global level, and with the recent increases in the adoption of EVs, the automotive market is starting to put pressure on the electric systems worldwide.
There were also about 832.000 plug-less hybrids registered in the same month, meaning that nearly 30% of the global car market is electrified, one way or another.
In March, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which saw an 81% increase year over year (YoY), were growing faster than plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), which saw a 19% increase YoY, but at the same time suffered from sale drops in Europe.
BEVs accounted for 75% of the plug-in vehicle registrations worldwide in March.
At the top of the charts when it comes to global sale of plug-in electric vehicles stand two Tesla Models and one car from Chinese carmaker Wuling.
The Tesla Model Y was the leader in plug-in sales, with over 92.000 cars sold worldwide in March, followed by the Model 3, with almost 82.000 cars sold, and in third place came the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV, with over 47.500 vehicles sold in the same month.
The Tesla Model Y's 92.221 units sold in the third month of this year set a new record for the demand of an EV.
Of the total EV demand for the month of March, Tesla's two top models accounted for more than 20% of the sales, 20.4% to be exact, while the little Wuling HongGuang Mini EV held 5.6% of the share.
Cars like the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 managed to reach 10.857 and 10.848 customers each, both companies holding a 1.3% share of the total EV sells for the month of March.
For the first quarter of 2022 regarding plug-in vehicle sales worldwide, the Tesla Model Y has a share of 8.5%, with 169.682 cars sold, followed by the Tesla Model 3, with 6.4% share and 127.936 vehicles sold, and again, the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV, with 5% share and 100.361 cars registered.
As far as the top three manufacturers on a global level regarding the sales of plug-in vehicles in March, we have Tesla as the number one manufacturer in terms of sales, with 180,253 cars shipped to customers, accounting for 21.2%, followed by Chinese manufacturer BYD, with 104.669 cars sold and a 12.3% share. In the third place we find another Chinese carmaker, SGMW, with 52.053 cars shipped and 6.1% market share.
The next three positions are covered by European manufacturers BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, all of them accounting for nearly 10% market share combined.
If we look at the first manufacturers regarding first quarter sales, the positions remain unchanged, with Tesla being first, with 15.5% market share and over 310.000 cars sold, BYD second, with 14.3% share and almost 286.000 cars sold and SGMW, with 5.7% share and nearly 115.000 vehicles sold.
BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz sit on the next positions and all account for a 10.8% share combined.
Regarding the world's top automotive groups in Q1 for plug-in sales, we have Tesla in the first position, with 310.411 cars sold, followed by the BYD group in the second position, with 285.849 cars sold, and Chinese group SAIC, with 170.454 vehicles sold.
For full electric cars sales worldwide in the first quarter, Tesla is still the first carmaker, with 310.411 cars sold and a 21.6% share, SAIC coming in second place, with 154.623 vehicles sold and a 10.8% share and BYD group in third place, with 144.203 pure electric cars sold, gaining 5% YoY.
Europe saw about 250.000 plug-in vehicles sold in March, with the first quarter seeing 565.000 of those vehicles registered.
