However, CleanTehnica reports that the model was, in fact, spotted, at the new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, and this particular model is expected to be the first using Tesla's new 4680 battery cells.
The new battery technology is twice as big as current battery cells used in the Model Y Long Range, but they can hold five time more energy compared to that model.
These cells are packaged in a structural battery pack that lowers the manufacturing cost, thus reducing the price for the end user as well.
The new model is apparently exclusive to the company's employees as of right now, and according to the Ride the Lightning podcast, the Standard Range Model Y will cost 59.999 dollars, 3.000 less that the Dual Motor Long Range version of the vehicle.
The car can supposedly reach 100 kilometers per hour from nothing in 5 seconds, 0.2 worse than the Long Range variant, and top speed is 217 km/h.
While Tesla does offer a single-motor Standard Range Model Y in China, this is the first time the model was spotted in another market, and it is an indication that the American EV maker could bring the price down on other models with its 4680 batteries.
Any thoughts?
