Company officials also mentioned that they want to cover 70% of the energy needed for vehicle production with renewable sources by the next decade, up from the current 45-50%.

According to Reuters, Joerg Burzer, production chief at Mercedes-Benz, mentioned that 15% of the energy should come from wind and solar installations either on the plants themselves, or linked to them.

The rest of the energy required for production will be sourced through Power Purchase Agreements, and energy producers will be paid in order to provide a certain amount of energy over a number of years for a fixed price.

Mercedes-Benz is looking forward to purchasing one billion euros worth of wind energy by 2025, Burzer added.

The chief of production said that while the company still relies on gas as a backup source for the production, it is looking forward to minimize how much of those resources it will use.

This year, in March, Mercedes-Benz announced they will build a battery recycling factory for EV batteries, which could recycle as much as 2.500 tons of batteries per year.
