According to InsideEVs, this increase in sales comes in spite of the overall dive of the market by 18% compared to last year, to 3.4 million units.

Experian's car registration data shows that over 158.600 battery-powered vehicles were registered in the first quarter of 2022, 60% more compared to last year.

This caused the overall BEV (battery-electric vehicle) market in the US to grow to a record high 4.6%.

Europeans started adopting more battery-powered vehicles as well, with plug-in registrations in Q1 of 2022 counting around 565.000 vehicles, a 24% YoY increase. This refers to both PHEV cars (plug-in-hybrid cars) and BEV.

At the top of the electric cars in the US, we have all Tesla models, the Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X respectively. The next three cars in the top belong to Hyundai Motor Group, those being the Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 and the Kia Niro EV.

There is a European carmaker in the top regarding the first 10 EVs sold in America, which is Volkswagen with the ID.4.

Tesla's dominance is shown by the 113.882 vehicles registered from the company, up by 59% YoY, meaning that the carmaker has a 71.8% domestic market share in the BEV segment.

Hyundai Motor Group, with 15.414 cars sold from both brands, Hyundai and Kia, is also a surprise in the American plug-in market, the Korean group essentially selling almost twice as many BEVs compared to American carmaker Ford, which managed to sell 7.407 vehicles in Q1 of 2022.

Nissan, Polestar and Rivian are also among the preferred brands when it comes to plug-in cars of customers based in America.
