Euronews.green writes that Drax, a renewable power development company, wants to build the new water battery, worth 581 million euros, in its existing facility, the Cruachan reservoir.

Water batteries are not a new concept, as there are countries already making use of them, such as Switzerland, who last year built its own underground water battery, with a capacity of 20 million kWh. The way these complexes work is that they pump the water upstream into the reservoir with the help of specialized turbines. Once clean power is needed, the water is then slowly released back at the bottom and is used to activate special generators that produce power.

The Drax-owned Cruachan plant will see the expansion with 600 megawatts of power and with the right government regulations, possible investments could see the capacity more than double, says company CEO Will Gardiner.

With "billions of pounds" worth of investments ready for green projects, the British government is confident in its ability to deliver sustainable projects.

A spokesperson said that "pumped hydro storage will help deliver greater energy security and economic growth and we have already confirmed our intention to enable investment in these technologies while removing regulatory barriers."
