According to Electrive, Nikola announced that the company's battery-powered trucks will be available in Europe when it started the collaboration with Iveco.

The Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer took control of the production of the electric trucks at its plant in Ulm.

For the small series production of the Tre tractor, Nikola supplies the electric drive system, while Iveco brings the platform and driver's cabin.

A total of 25 Nikola Tre battery-powered trucks will be used for this test phase in the Port of Hamburg and the two companies will be checking out multiple charging options for the optimal results.

Christian Sulser, board member for sales & marketing at Iveco, stated that "the first phase serves the purposes of demonstrating zero-emission container transport in the port of Hamburg on public roads and testing the charging infrastructure and processes, as well as generating further project content and ideas for the rest of the project."

"At the start of the project, we are using mobile chargers, but we are also already examining suitable locations for a fast-charging infrastructure", he added.

The Nikola Tre tractor has two 480 kW (643 HP) electric motors and company President Michael Lohscheller stated that "strong partners like the Port of Hamburg are further proof that the Nikola Tre BEV is the right truck for companies that want to do more than just talking about climate change."

"These demo vehicles are proof that companies can really make a difference to the planet by using zero-emission vehicles in their fleets", he concluded.

Back in August, Nikola acquired Romeo Power for 144 million USD in order to supply its own batteries for the electric truck, which company officials viewed as a strategic move.
