As per Electrive, "gelified" batteries should be able to address things like safety, price and sustainability.

The initial objective for the next-generation type of batteries was to switch to a solid electrolyte, but currently, researchers are exploring another way, featuring a gel-like alternative to a cell's main components.

The 17 companies and institutes working on the project will therefore aim to create a substance that is gel-like, in liquid form, but which would not be flow easily.

Experts working on the project expect the new type of batteries to have high energy density, meaning they should have "excellent performance in high-voltage applications."

With the new type of gelified batteries, manufacturing could be made easier, as well, lowering the overall production cost, which could also imply a reduction in energy consumption during production of 50%.
