According to Electrive, the plug-in hybrid variant will be available as an R/T model, which will come with a 15.5 kWh battery pack, offering a total electric range of over 48 kilometers.

The car is based on the Alfa Romeo Tonale and the R/T model features a 1.3 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine besides the electric one, with a total power output of 281 hp and 519 Nm of torque.

The R/T Hornet also features a generator that transmits power to the engine belt, so that the batteries can be recharged on the go.

An additional "PowerShot" function allows the power output of the car to be bumped by an additional 24 hp for as much as 15 seconds, which according to Dodge, should allow the car to reach 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, one second faster than with the function disabled.

Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Dodge, said that "the Dodge brand’s electrified transformation has left the starting line, with the all-new Dodge Hornet R/T representing the first electrified performance vehicle from Dodge."

"The Dodge Hornet is ready to shake up the mainstream compact utility vehicle segment with a look, feel and performance that are unmistakably Dodge", he added.

Alongside this announcement, officials of the American car brand also said they will stop the production of the Charger and Challenger models with internal combustion engines from 2023.

Instead, fully electric models will replace them from 2024.

"We are celebrating the end of an era — and the start of a bright new electrified future — by staying true to our brand", Kuniskis said.
