According to Electrive, the first battery production line in Leipzig started operating in May 2021, building battery packs for the BMW iX.

The second production line for batteries is replacing the old assembly line for the BMW i3.

Company officials claim to have invested some 70 million euros in the new battery production line, which enabled the creation of around 250 jobs.

Markus Fallböhmer, head of engine and electric drive production at the BMW Group, said that "today’s launch of Leipzig’s second battery module production line makes an important contribution to delivering the battery components needed to make a growing number of electrified vehicles."

The expansion of EV parts manufacturing is part of BMW's plan to achieve at least 50% EV sales from the whole lineup by 2030.

Company officials also aim to further expand the Leipzig facility as early as next year to allow for more flexibility when it comes to EV module production.
