According to Reuters, Toyota and Lexus only have three battery-electric models on the market and is lagging behind the competition, which brings more and more fully-electric cars to get a share of the green mobility segment.

Toyota, instead, focused heavily on hybrid powertrains, which are still more suitable, according to the manufacturer, for the vast majority of the world. While the Japanese carmaker will now be focusing on EVs for production, hybrids will still be part of its lineup.

"In the next few years, we will expand our line-up in the important battery electric category", said Toyota's new CEO.

By the next decade, battery-powered vehicles could make up half of the total automotive production worldwide.

Toyota's previous target as far as EV sales go by 2026 was 1.2 million vehicles, so a 300.000 unit difference compared to current goals.
