According to ESG Today, TotalEnergies set the new objectives as a response to the increase in demand from its customers in the aviation sector and to be able to deliver, executives will "invest massively" in scaling-capacity.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said that "TotalEnergies is taking action to meet the strong demand from the aviation industry to reduce its carbon footprint."

US startup CleanJoule is another company working in the aviation sector that recently raised 50 million dollars to further develop the technology to produce more cost-effective Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Compared to traditional kerosene, SAF can reduce the carbon footprint of the fuels used in transport by 85%, but for now, the supply of the clean alternative is not large enough and the price is not as competitive.

On an EU level, the aviation industry needs to make quite a number of changes, one of them being implementing 2% sustainable aviation fuel in 2025, with this number later on growing to 70% share by 2050.

TotalEnergies officials said that the company's increase in production capacity would enable it to meet EU's fuel mix requirements by 2028 and by 2030, the company wants its SAF output to be 10% of the world's total at that time.

Executives from the energy company announced investments of 400 million euros to transform the Grandpuits refinery into a low-carbon production unit with a capacity of 210.000 tons per year by 2025. Later, in 2027, the capacity will be increased to 285.000 tons every year.
