For 36 hours, participants will work as a team to develop innovative solutions to help urban concentrations use their resources more efficiently and create sustainble urban environment by exploring the connections between urban areas and peripheries, such as villages or small cities. #SustainCityHack will take place between 8 and 10th of April.

These solutions will respond at first to the challenges of the city of Cluj-Napoca, in Western Romania, but could be applicable to other cities in Romania that face similar problems.

By 2050, two-thirds of the people will live in urban areas around the world. Given this growth, sustainable development cannot be achieved without transforming the way we design and organise urban areas.

Almost 55% of the total population of Romania lives in urban areas. While Romania remains still one of the least urbanised European states, inequalities between urban and rural areas are significant and the dynamics of the rural exodus are strong.

The participating teams will need to find solutions to various problems, such as:

  • Urban mobility - reducing emissions and promoting easy to use mobility.
  • Urban regeneration - using unused urban spaces and transforming them while promoting growth and reducing unemployement.
  • Urban planning - sustainable and forward thinking development.

The event will be in English. You can register directly from the form here.
