The company, together with its new partners, is committed to converting methane from cow dung into a carbon-neutral fuel source.

Tripartite agreement for more sustainable cities

On September 6, 2023, at the Embassy of India in Japan, Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki), a well-known name in the automotive industry, signed a groundbreaking tripartite agreement that will significantly influence India's energy future.

Together with its trusted partners, Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suzuki in India, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Banas Dairy, one of Asia's largest dairy producers, the company has entered into a contract to build a biogas production plant.

This agreement represents a firm commitment by all three parties to contribute to India's ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality. The event was attended by Banas Dairy Chairman Chaudhry, NDDB Chairman and CEO Shah and Suzuki Chairman Suzuki. India's Ambassador to Japan, His Excellency Mr. Sibi George, also present at the ceremony, expressed his warmest wishes for the beginning of a new sustainable era in India.

Waste turned into clean energy: Suzuki and the biogas demonstration project

India is a country with an impressive diversity of resources, but faces a problem with global impact - methane emissions from cow dung. This gas has a greenhouse effect 28 times greater than CO2, contributing to climate change at a rapid rate.

But Suzuki, together with its partners NDDB and Banas Dairy, aims to turn this natural resource into an environmentally friendly and sustainable fuel. Suzuki and its partners signed a MoU in December 2022 and laid the foundations of an ambitious plan for the future. With four biogas production plants scheduled to start operation in 2025 in Gujarat's Banaskantha district, the total investment of INR 2.3 billion (about JPY 4 billion) promises to revolutionise India's energy sector. The plants will generate biogas by fermenting cow dung, and the resulting fuel will be used by compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

Suzuki's commitment to a sustainable future

Given the global climate challenges and the urgent necessity to transform the way we interact with the environment, Suzuki is firmly committed to a sustainable future. Regarding the company's endeavours in India, Suzuki President said:

Suzuki is tackling to reduce greenhouse gas in ways that suit the situations of each country and region. In India, there is expectation for biogas which is said to have high reduction effects.

But Suzuki's commitment doesn't stop there. President Toshihiro Suzuki stressed:

”While aiming to realize carbon net zero in India, SUZUKI will also contribute in revitalizing rural communitiesand improving energy self-efficiency.”

Thriving rural communities and eco-efficiency

Suzuki and its partners do not stop at converting methane into biogas. They are also taking an active role in transforming rural communities, where every aspect of society contributes to a sustainable environment.

The biogas production process generates a valuable residue that can be used as organic fertiliser. This endeavor aligns with the Government of India's initiative to promote the utilization of organic fertilizers, thereby enhancing soil quality.

Suzuki and its partners also plan to roll out the business model across India. This means revitalising rural communities, creating new jobs and increasing eco-efficiency. By recycling waste and adopting a recycling-oriented approach, this initiative paves the way for a sustainable and prosperous society.

With every part of this project, Suzuki and its partners demonstrate that eco-efficiency is not just a dream, but a reality that is built step by step. In this eco-friendly future, rural communities thrive, the environment prospers, and every citizen plays an active role in creating a better world for future generations.
