Electrive reports that currently, Scania uses a Citywide BEV 12-meter long platform for low-floor buses, which can be equipped with two battery sizes, either 250 or 320 kWh. The upcoming platform could see these numbers increased significantly, as per Scania officials.

Thus, the new architecture could see battery sizes go up to 416 and 520 kWh, respectively, which could deliver as much as 400 and 500 kilometers of range.

Targeting a sustainable battery production, Scania started collaborating with Northvolt on the development of the actual cells.

"Scania’s updated battery packs and battery management system allow faster charging – and the new robust charging port placement makes it more convenient as well", company officials said, without mentioning anything specific on charging speed. For the electric motors, however, we know that those are rated at a power of 250 kW and a maximum output of 300 kW.

For safety, Scania officials said that advanced driver assist and cyber security threat protection features are part of the course, with additional systems improving the driving experience in this regard.

Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management, People Transport Solutions at Scania, said that "during the development of our new battery electric bus platform, range, performance, and battery responsibility have been key areas – all crucial to achieving viable and sustainable transport systems. Combined with our latest e-mobility services and solutions, this means we will provide complete and highly competitive solutions for urban applications in all our current regions."
