ESG Today reports that Chipotle ultimately aims to slash emissions in half across its entire value chain by 2030. To achieve that, the company will implement solar panels wherever possible and it will ensure that all equipment, especially cooking one, will be switched to electric, instead of gas.

Heat pumps will also be installed for heating the water, while biodegradable cutlery and cactus leather chairs will be part of the sustainability effort. The restaurants, especially those where renewable power can't be installed, will still use green energy purchased through certified renewable energy credits.

Similar efforts are taking place in Europe, where McDonald's locals are running exclusively on locally sourced green power in the Netherlands since the beginning of this year, with a focus, obviously, on reducing energy consumption, as well.

Also, since 2021, Burger King and EDP started generating renewable energy in Spain for 300 Burger King restaurants located in Spain, with the intention of moving to Portugal, as well.

The calculated benefit of the initiative was equivalent to planting around 150.000 trees.
