As per Electrive, this operation is set to be completed by 2037 and as many as 102 battery-powered trains will be purchased, starting 2029. The net-zero multiple-unit trains will be running on electricity from overhead lines when these are available and the charging of the batteries will also take place on the same sections. Then, when no power grid is available, batteries will provide the required electricity.

To assist with charging the batteries, overhead islands could be installed, so that the trains don't risk remaining stranded due to lack of power.

Lower Saxony’s Transport Minister Olaf Lies said that "starting in 2029, we will successively deploy 102 new multiple-unit trains with battery technology that are emission-free on the road – and thus phase out previous diesel fleets. This is an important decision for the mobility revolution. The new trains offer more space than the vehicles currently in use."

Hydrogen-powered trains are already running in Lower Saxony, 14 of them to be exact, but the transport ministry decided to acquire only battery-powered units this time around, since these are less expensive to operate.
