ESG Today reports that the initiative will go in effect immediately and through the agreements signed with shipping companies such as Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk and CMA CGM, Nestlé looks to eliminate around 200.000 tons of carbon emissions related to shipping per year.

Thus, the company will also avoid buying and using around 500.000 barrels of oil during one year of shipping.

Nestlé officials announced back in 2019 that the food and beverage company wants to become fully carbon neutral by 2050, while it looks to reduce emissions by 20% by 2025 and by 50% before the end of the decade, respectively.

Stephanie Hart, Executive Vice President and Head of Operations at Nestlé, said that "the agreements we’ve signed with our shipping partners will help us cut emissions and immediately reduce our carbon footprint. We know this is an interim solution and continue to encourage the development of longer term decarbonization solutions in shipping and distribution."

Johan Sigsgaard, Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer Ocean of A.P. Moller – Maersk, added that "this is a very decisive step of Nestlé to use our very low GHG emission solution for 100% of their ocean cargo with Maersk. Having green fuel solutions like ECO Delivery at hand, it still takes such impressive commitments of our customers like Nestlé to make the decarbonization of our shipping and landside logistics actually happen."
