As per Euronews.green, almost 700 million tons of emissions per year could be avoided if every person on the planet would be using their bike as much as the Dutch. This is the opinion of experts at the University of Southern Denmark. Thus, 686 million tons of CO2 could be saved if we all used the bicycle to travel for 2.6 kilometers every day.

The experts say that "the significant untapped climate and health benefits of increasing bicycle use suggest an urgent need to promote sustainable bicycle use."

If you want to buy yourself a bike, but aren't sure which model is best for your needs, you can check out our guide for buying the ideal bicycle for commutes or riding in off-road conditions.

Another two reasons why you might want to use the bike to get around more often is the fact that people who cycle regularly have a 45% lower chance of developing cancer and a 46% lower chance of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Bicycle journeys only make up for around 5% of all daily trips, despite the fact that bike production increased dramatically over the past six decades, to 123 million bikes in 2015 compared to 20.7 million back in 1962.

The researchers at the University of Southern Denmark said that "lessons learned from successful experiences in countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, particularly on the city level such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam, would be essential."

Thus, they say that developing a proper infrastructure to encourage people to use their bicycle is essential so that the population feels safe to ride around especially in busy cities.
