As per ESG Today, this is the largest corporate clean energy purchase agreement to date, being almost 8 times larger than the previous largest PPA, according to officials at the two companies. Through the agreement, Microsoft will get access to the 10.5 GW clean energy capacity to supply its cloud data centers with carbon-free power.

One of Microsoft's sustainability commitments includes running all its buildings and data centers on renewable energy by 2025.

Adrian Anderson, General Manager of Renewables, Carbon Free Energy, and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) at Microsoft, said that "this collaboration with Brookfield drives the innovative development of more diverse energy grids globally and contributes to delivering our goal of achieving 100% of our electricity consumption, 100% of the time, matched by zero carbon energy purchases by 2030."

Brookfield officials say that the company's efforts to deliver 10.5 GW of capacity between 2026 and 2030 will contribute to the decarbonization of the energy used by data centers around the world.

The agreement reached between Brookfield and Microsoft includes the potential of expanding renewable capacity in the US, Europe, Asia-Pacific, as well as Latin America.
