Reuters reports that this will contribute to the production of some 50.000 batteries for future Mercedes-Benz EVs.

The cells that are to be recycled will be coming from test vehicles, as well as other sources, and should this project be successful, recycling efforts could be upscaled in medium to long term.

The physical separation of battery cells will begin in December, right before the end of this year and the facility could be completed a few months after that. Sustainability seems to be the focus, as the current Mercedes-Benz plant located in Kuppenheim is already running on renewable solar green power.

Thekla Walker, minister for the environment, climate and energy in Baden-Württemberg, said that "this is of particular importance in view of the limited availability of important raw materials that are in high demand, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel."
