Electrive writes that software-focused company Plus developed the required solution to enable the Level 4 autonomy. Level 4 autonomy or High Driving Automation implies that the vehicle can operate entirely autonomously under certain conditions and that no driver is required to intervene in case of an emergency. This means that he can do other activities, such as reading or even sleeping and also, Level 4 enabled vehicles can drive without any passengers. Level 4 autonomous vehicles need a predefined route, such as on the highway or in a parking lot to function.

Plus officials claim that he company's autonomous driving technologies are already being used in the US, Europe and Australia, using a plethora of sensors, cameras and even LiDAR scanners. Hyundai officials claim that the Xcient Fuel Cell is the first hydrogen-powered truck to feature full Level 4 autonomy for tests in the US.

Martin Zeilinger, Executive Vice President and Head of Commercial Vehicle Development at Hyundai, said that "by adding autonomous capabilities to our world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-powered XCIENT Fuel Cell truck, Hyundai is looking forward to providing fleets and vehicle operators additional solutions that enhance road safety and freight efficiencies thanks to Plus’s industry-leading autonomous driving technology."

Hyundai claims that the Xcient, released back in 2020, features 725 kilometers of range thanks to the two 90kW fuel cells and the 350kW electric motor.
