GM invested in Mitra Chem with the aim of developing new solutions for the electrification of transport. GM said Mitra Chem's AI platform will allow it to accelerate efforts to create cheaper batteries in the United States.

Mitra Chem was founded in 2021 in Silicon Valley and makes iron cathode technologies that help lithium-ion batteries stop using nickel and cobalt, which have a complicated supply chain and rely on mining that is often not it is sustainable.

According to Mitra Chem, their technology can reduce production time for new batteries by up to 90%.

GM and Mitra Chem have said they want to partner on active materials based on iron cathodes that will allow new batteries to be built at a good cost for GM's electric cars.
