Electrive reports that through this project, Siemens aims to replace all diesel-powered trains in Denmark with Mireo Plus B battery-powered trains, the first of which will be delivered to Midtjyske Jernbaner.

The two car electric units will be delivered by 2024, says Siemens Mobility.

The Mireo Plus B are a battery-powered version of the Mireo trains, and the units are hybrid, meaning they can run on overhead lines, as well as on non-electrified sections, where diesel trains have been the norm.

The new battery-powered trains will be able to accommodate 120 seated passengers and can reach a top speed of 140 km/h.

The battery range is about 80 km, with the batteries being rechargeable through the overhead 25 kV line or through braking.

Martha Vrist, CEO of Midtjyske Jernbaner Drift, says that the trains are “a crucial step in our own green transformation, but also an important step towards the goal of CO2-neutral train transport throughout Denmark”.

Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, adds that "with the acquisition of the Mireo Plus B trains, Midtjyske Jernbaner is replacing conventional diesel vehicles with state-of-the-art and locally emission-free trains. This sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility option is an important contribution to the region.”

This represents Denmark's first effort to invest in battery-powered trains and also the first order outside of Germany for the Siemens Mobility's Mireo Plus B trains, indicating that more countries are willing to adopt the technology for a more sustainable transport system.
