ESG Today reports that although no time-bound requirement was set for the phase out, there is at least a consensus on the need to move away from polluting power sources. Thus, world leaders call for "transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science."

Tripling renewable capacity and doubling energy efficiency, with a focus on cooling appliances, were other focus points at this year's COP28.

Dave Jones from clean energy think tank Ember says that "renewables and efficiency must now be at the top of every energy and climate plan. Together they are the single largest actions that can deliver rapid fossil fuel cuts this decade."

Mohamed Adow, Director of Power Shift Africa, said that "we are finally naming the elephant in the room. The genie is never going back into the bottle. Future COPs will only turn the screw even more on dirty energy."
