ESG Today writes that Canada wants to have a net-zero grid by 2035, as per the statements of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at COP26. Also this year, Canada and the US plan to release clean energy regulations, with US president Joe Biden having presented some proposals which should help reduce the emissions coming from the energy sector. Among these are CO2 emission controls, which could be implemented at fossil-fired plants, starting 2030.

Back to Canada's plans, should the regulations go into force, Canadian officials estimated that the savings in emissions could amount to a total of 340 million tons.

Canada's Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, said that "a net-zero grid will serve as the basis for climate actions across the economy, like helping Canadians switch to electric transportation and heating, or the development of new and cleaner industries. The benefits, in terms of good jobs and clean air in our communities, are enormous."

Energy generated with the help of fossil fuels is set to still be allowed a few years after 2035, under the condition that no more than 30 tons of CO2 per GWh to be released. Carbon capture solutions are expected to play a major role in this case.
