According to Reuters, the new burner can switch between hydrogen and gas while running, meaning that it should be not only more environmentally friendly, but also reliable.

BMW officials hope that by 2024, the company will be able to import green hydrogen through a direct pipeline.

Plant director Petra Peterhaensel mentioned that if the testing unit proves itself and if enough green hydrogen can be supplied, then all paint booths will be switched to the same hybrid system.

Additionally, BMW will add a third battery production line at the Leipzig factory, which will be aiding the existing two lines, and the company is also looking to add five lacquering lines for the cells in 2023.

Markus Fallböhmer, Head of Engine and E-Drive Production at BMW AG, said that "from 2024, the entire process chain for high-voltage battery production will run not just at Dingolfing but at Leipzig as well."
