According to company’s officials cited by Reuters, on the list of new investments BMW is looking into are those in solar, geothermal and hydrogen.

In 2021, the car manufacturer relied on natural gas for 54% of its energy consumption. To reduce dependency on natural gas from Russia, the company is exploring the opportunity to equip its factories with solar panels in order to produce the energy needed for its manufacturing process.

At the same time, the company plans to collaborate with local authorities to transport hydrogen to its factory in Leipzig.

"Our industry accounts for around 37% of German natural gas consumption," said representatives of the German carmaker.

Outside Germany, BMW is working on a new plant which will be the world's first auto factory to run entirely without fossil fuels.

At the same time, the BMW Group is one of the first carmakers to place its trust in more sustainable automotive OEM coatings certified according to BASF’s biomass balance approach.

The BMW Group has chosen to use BASF Coatings’ CathoGuard 800 ReSource e-coat at its plants in Leipzig, Germany, and Rosslyn, South Africa, and the iGloss matt ReSource clearcoat throughout Europe.
