ESG Today reports that Pat Lindner, VP of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging at Amazon, said that "this is part of our long-term work to be a leader in sustainability, and we’ll continue to invest in innovative technology, machine learning, and more sustainable materials to ensure packaging—whether used by us or other companies—is good for our customers, communities, and the planet."

Company officials said that it uses special algorithms to develop the lightest possible material that can still protect the packaging and this method allowed it to save around 60.000 tons of cardboard every year.

According to Amazon, 40% its deliveries were shipped in cardboard packages, while 49% were shipped in flexible packaging methods, such as paper and recyclable plastic envelopes.
