ESG Today writes that Amazon announced this clean energy goal back in 2019, pledging to switch its operations, including data centers, corporate buildings and stores, to clean renewable electricity by 2030. At the time, Amazon was a 42% share of renewable energy, meaning that in four years, it achieved the other 58%.
This is due to investments worth billions of dollars in renewable power, but also spending some of its budget on purchasing clean power from other producers, making Amazon one of the largest customers for green electricity.
The e-commerce company invested in over 500 energy projects worldwide, of which 240 were solar and wind developments, 10 battery storage solutions and 6 offshore wind plants.
Kara Hurst, Amazon Chief Sustainability Officer, said that "reaching our renewable energy goal is an incredible achievement, and we’re proud of the work we’ve done to get here, seven years early. We also know that this is just a moment in time, and our work to decarbonize our operations will not always be the same each year—we’ll continue to make progress, while also constantly evolving on our path to 2040."
Any thoughts?
