According to Electrive, the new facility is similar in construction to the one in Schierling, Germany, and occupies a surface of 22.000 square meters.

Webasto hopes to manufacture some 110.000 battery modules per year at the new plant, hoping to reach 160.000 by 2025.

The German supplier invested 88 million euros in this project.

The company held the official opening event recently, although the production started in April.

Company officials say that the new facility represents "a milestone for developing the electromobility business."

Webasto assembles two battery pack sizes in South Korea, a long-range 68.7 kWh model and a standard 50.9 kWh battery pack.

The company announced earlier this year that it has received a battery order from an unnamed German carmaker. In order to meet demand, the supplier will build another plant in Europe, although the location has not been disclosed.

Dr Holger Engelmann, Chairman of the Management Board of Webasto SE, said that "South Korea, India and Japan are dynamic growth markets with great potential for both our core business and our electromobility solutions."

"As a basic principle, we produce in the market for the market, so given the need for our products in these countries, it quickly became clear that we would strengthen our local presence", he added.
