ESG Today writes that SolarNova, the name of EDP's project, was launched back in 2014 to accelerate the deployment of solar power systems in order to support Singapore's objectives to install 2GW worth of photovoltaics by 2030. The announcement marks the second agreement between the two companies for the supply of green, solar energy.

Miguel Stilwell D’Andrade, CEO of EDP Renewables, said that "we are strengthening EDP’s global collaboration with Microsoft through this project and together we are taking a step towards achieving Singapore’s sustainability goals of at least 2GWp of solar energy by 2030. Contracting with Microsoft is a catalyst for accelerating the energy transition and to continue investing in the region."

The partnership will also support Microsoft's goals to use 100% renewable power by 2030 through proprietary green power installations, as well as power purchase agreements. The company also committed to become carbon-negative by the next decade.

Adrian Anderson GM, Renewables, Carbon Free Energy, Microsoft, added that "building our renewable energy portfolio with EDPR ensures that we can continue to secure renewable energy supply to meet our Microsoft’s ambitious renewable energy and decarbonization goals."
