According to The Guardian, Earth's oceans were the hottest in 2022 compared to any previous recordings, with more than 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases being absorbed by these large masses of water.

Experts, who started recording ocean temperatures in 1958, say that the maritime temperature situation got worse after 1990.

It's the temperature of the surface of the water that causes the most issues and contributes to some of the worse extreme weather phenomena, such as hurricanes and increased humidity, which in turn causes more rains and floodings in vulnerable areas.

The researchers who analyzed the ocean temperature last year stated that "the Earth’s energy and water cycles have been profoundly altered due to the emission of greenhouse gases by human activities, driving pervasive changes in Earth’s climate system."

"We are getting more extreme weather because of the warming oceans and that has tremendous consequences all around the world", they added.

Experts are warning that currently, oceans could be at their hottest temperatures in the past 1.000 years and that they are warming faster compared to any other time in the last 2.000 years.

Scientists also added that "there are increasing occurrences of record-shattering heatwaves and droughts in the northern hemisphere, consistent with intensive ocean warming in the mid-latitude Pacific and Atlantic oceans."

This means that there is direct correlation between the number of heatwaves that hit many countries during summer and the ever-warmer oceans.

Experts say that the oceans will continue to get warmer and influence the climate around the world until we will be able to achieve net-zero emissions.
