Established after the UN Conference of the Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972, the World Environment Day takes place every year on June 5th.

Annika Strandhall, Sweden’s minister for climate and the environment, said that "making the green jobs of the future by accelerating the climate transition is one of the top priorities for the Swedish government. As part of our efforts to implement our climate ambitions, we must take actions against activities that have a negative impact on our health and our environment.”

“Our message to the global community is clear. The winners in the global race will be the ones that speed up the transition, not the ones that lag behind and cling to a dependency on fossil fuels,” she added.

According to Fibre2Fashion, tens of millions of people around the world joined social media conversations in order to demand immediate action for the climate and the environment.

Many countries and communities around the world took action on the World Environment Day and promised to make a real difference on the environment.

Religious leaders took part in the action as well, signing an agreement regarding climate-responsible financing.

The agreement implies the fact that these organizations will only work with financial institutions that are in line with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting the rate of global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

One of the countries that will take action to support the environment is Paraguay, who received financial support for 50 million USD from the Global Environment Facility. The country will use the funding to launch the project Paraguay + Verde in order to address climate change.

Argentina will work with Chile with regards to implementing the invasive species national strategy.

Companies will get involved in helping the environment as well, one of them being Singapore's Quest Global, an engineering service company, who announced the Quest Global Pledge, a global reforestation effort. The company will partner with One Tree Planted in order to plant 500.000 trees by 2025.

This year marked the 49th celebration of the World Environment Day.
