According to Business Traveller, the airport operator has implemented a food waste treatment plan which could capture and compost over 2.000 tons of food waste per year.

UAE officials claim that the litter will be coming from food and beverage outlets, lounges and hotels found across DXB terminals.

Through this initiative, Dubai authorities hope to prevent the decomposing of food waste in landfills, process which releases methane gas, which is considered to be 72% more harmful compared to CO2.

The food waste management system was done in collaboration with Dubai Airport's waste management partner Beeah Group.

So far, the program was able to help with the reduction of more than 40% of the food waste and there is an extra initiative that aims to capture 100% of the oil used for cooking in order to turn it into biodiesel.

The waste management initiative was announced with the occasion of the World Environment Day.

Jamal Zaal, vice-president of Safety and Sustainability at Dubai Airports, said that "capturing and diverting all forms of waste from landfills is a strategically important component of our waste management programme. While airport operations contribute a very small percentage of the overall waste generated at DXB, we are working in close partnership with airlines, F&B facilities, and all other partners across the airport to make a unified commitment to achieving and surpassing our 60 per cent waste reduction objective."
