What are tornadoes: the twisters you can't outrun and can't hide from

Although not a frequently occurring event in Europe and certainly one that doesn't bring as much destruction as in other places, tornadoes are still extreme weather events that happen pretty much all over the world and can grow big, causing more damage and taking more lives. But what causes these extreme weather phenomena and how can we take shelter from them.
