As per ESG Today, Ebb Carbon employs the resources of our oceans to capture and store carbon emissions, which helps these ecosystems, as well, since the process prevents the acidification. Founded in 2021 by former Tesla and Google X employees, the company separates marine water into acidic and alkaline streams, with the alkaline one being returned in the ocean. By converting the CO2 already present in the water into bicarbonate ions, experts enable it to capture additional emissions.
Initially, Ebb Carbon will capture 1.333 tons of CO2 for Microsoft and after the initial project, the American tech giant will have the option of purchasing an additional 350.000 tons, which would be delivered over the course of a decade.
Brian Marrs, Senior Director of Energy & Carbon Removal at Microsoft, said that "the ocean is a critical part of the carbon cycle. Ebb has developed technology to leverage the natural attributes of the ocean – its massive surface area and natural ocean processes that already pull CO2 from the atmosphere – to durably remove and store large volumes of atmospheric carbon."
Carbon removal quality assessment expert Isometric will validate the carbon credits generated by Ebb Carbon, ensuring the scientific quality and the transparency of the process.
