ESG Today writes that the effort is part of Alphabet's 2020 plan to run the company's operations exclusively on clean energy by 2030. The recent agreement will allow the company to run at least 80% of its operations on renewable energy in Arizona by 2026.

Google recently launched its first Arizona-based data center, located in Mesa, which could go operational in 2025.

The recent agreement includes solar and wind power, as well as battery-powered storage to ensure a continuous flow of clean energy for Google's operations at its upcoming data center. At the same time, the Mesa data center will use air cooling, instead of water cooling, as the local water resources are at risk of getting depleted in the future.

Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Data Center Energy at Google, said that "our Mesa data center will be operational in 2025, and our work doesn’t end with these programs. We’ll continue to collaborate with SRP to decarbonize the grid, invest in local programs, and support overall economic development in the area."
