As per ESG Today, the wind-power solution was provided by Yara Marine Technologies and not only does it save emissions by helping with propulsion, it can also optimize the course of the ship for the best efficiency possible.
Thomas Koniordos, Chief Executive Officer, Yara Marine Technologies, said that "wind-assisted propulsion has the potential to offer immediate long-term solutions for shipping’s pathway to Net Zero."
The wind installations will help ship operators save as much as 6 tons of fuel per day, leading to CO2 savings of around 19.5 tons per day, while the system makes Berger Olympus the most powerful sailing cargo ship out there.
Berge Bulk plans to become a net-zero company by 2025, which is why experts analyze the possibility to retrofit other vessels, as well, with the WindWings system, especially those who frequently sail on favorable windy routes.
James Marshall, Chief Executive Officer, Berge Bulk, said that "from 2008 until today, we have achieved a remarkable 46% reduction in our CO2 emissions per ton mile, already surpassing the 2030 IMO target for reducing carbon emissions intensity. There’s still so much to do as we accelerate the transition to new fuel in the zero-carbon future."
