Euronews.green reports that the changes to EU's grid is necessary, since officials at Brussels expect million more battery-powered vehicles to take over the roads by 2030, as per decarbonization efforts in the region.

However, experts at electricity industry association Eurelectric warn that, in order for that to be possible, investments in EU's energy grid must increase by 84% from now and until 2050, compared to their value back in 2021.

Eurelectric Secretary General Kristian Ruby said that "we want to transform the entire energy system at record speed, replace fossil fuels - oil and gas - with electricity. So we add loads of new generation capacity to the grid, we add electric cars, heat pumps."

European Commission officials made some estimates of their own regarding the necessary investments in the energy infrastructure. They believe that around 584 billion euros per year are required until 2030 to ensure that the green lifestyle that we seek will be possible.

EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said that "if we will not upgrade grid infrastructure very fast, we will not achieve our 2030 targets."

Around 40% of Europe's energy grid distribution systems are four decades old and they are centralized around various power plants. In order for those to work properly with the increasing number of solar panels and wind turbines, serious upgrades will be necessary in most places.
