Euronews.green reports that over 80 countries backed the idea of quitting fossil fuels on a global level last year, at CO27, although as expected, oil and gas-rich countries opposed this concept.

Now it looks like diplomats from the EU's 27 countries are working on the draft that could start a new era for the way we power the planet, which could be showcased this November in Dubai. "The shift towards a climate neutral economy will require the global phase-out of [unabated] fossil fuels and a peak in their consumption already in the near term", a draft of the EU's negotiating stance said.

Despite the fact that they are the main drivers of today's climate change events, fossil fuels have not been agreed upon for a slowdown in any of UN's climate negotiations between countries around the world.

Due to be finalized in October, right before the meeting in Dubai, EU's document could see more modifications, as it currently pushes for a largely fossil-free global energy before mid-century.

In order to keep their economic advantage, some of the countries that rely on oil and gas for their income want to press on carbon capture solutions, instead of reducing their pollution output. However, some EU countries look to propose limits on how this technology will be used, which should be mostly in sectors that don't have any clean alternatives yet.
