ESG Today writes that this deal represents GM's largest PPC to date and an important step for the company's goal to become carbon neutral by 2040. Back in 2022, company officials said that they finalized the quest for companies that can provide GM with the renewable power it needs for all of its US-based facilities by the end of 2025, five years earlier than expected.
Currently, the company will source renewable power from 17 different facilities in 11 states, making GM the largest automotive manufacturer by renewable energy capacity purchased.
The grid that provides energy to GM's Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, will receive energy from NorthStar’s 180 MW Newport Solar project in Newport, Arkansas.
Rob Threlkeld, GM Director Of Global Energy Strategy, said that "by expanding our renewable electricity portfolio, we are taking a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and advancing our broader sustainability goals."
Brian Hartmann, President of NorthStar Clean Energy, added that "NorthStar is committed to helping our customers reach their sustainability and business goals and the Newport Solar project demonstrates how our approach enables companies like General Motors to achieve both."
Any thoughts?
