In 2021, there were more than 50 severe flood events around the world, resulting in combined economic losses of over 80 billion dollars.

”Floods affect nearly a third of the world population, more than any other peril. Given the scale of devastation, flood risk deserves the same attention and risk assessment rigour as primary perils such as hurricanes”, said Martin Bertogg, Head Cat Perils, Cyber & Geo, Swiss Re Institute, in a press release.

The future doesn't sound too good, in some parts of Europe the risk being even bigger in the future, both concerning the risk of having severe floods, and also from the point of view of the potential for human and material loses.

According to Reuters that cites a 2018 study in the journal Nature Climate Change, if European countries do not adapt to increasing flood risks, they could face up to nearly 1.000 billion euros in yearly damages by 2100.
