Global data centers account for 2% of the planet's total share of greenhouse gas emissions, almost the same as aviation and with increasing demand in computing, driven in part by artificial intelligence, the amount of emissions is expected to grow.
Some of the world's largest data center operators in the world, including Microsoft and Google, point at growing energy demand as being one of the main challenges in decarbonizing operations, says ESG Today.
Houston and Seattle-based Cloverleaf was founded with the purpose of helping large digital infrastructure sites reach net-zero goals and the company currently collaborates with regional US utilities and data center operators to supply on-site green power, as well as energy storage solutions.
David Berry, Cloverleaf CEO, said that "the rapid growth in demand for electricity to power cloud computing and artificial intelligence poses a major climate risk if fueled by high-emission fossil fuels. However, it’s also a major opportunity to catalyze the modernization of the US grid and the transition to a smarter and more sustainable electricity system through a novel approach to development."
Private capital investors NGP and Sandbrook Capital participated in the 300 million USD funding round.
