Cement manufacturing accounts for a large amount of the planet's CO2 emissions, at 8% of the total share. The industry is difficult to decarbonize and the products have one of the highest environmental footprints, as for each ton of cement, companies release 900 kilograms of CO2 in the atmosphere.

As per ESG Today, Sublime is a 2020-founded company that developed a proprietary manufacturing process for cement, which uses an electrolyzer to produce the construction material at ambient temperature, eliminating the need of fossil fuels that are used traditionally. At the same time, instead of using limestone as the main ingredient, Sublime is able to employ calcium-rich sources to manufacture the sustainable cement.

This enables the company to manufacture low-carbon cement alternatives without using carbon capture technologies, while the low-energy requirements of the process enable it to make use of renewable energy.

Sublime CEO and Co-Founder Dr. Leah Ellis said that "Holcim and CRH each bring unique strategic advantages and expertise in the industry, and these partnerships offer Sublime an unparalleled opportunity to scale our technology with the urgency the climate crisis requires."

The 75 million USD will be used in part for the build-out and starting the operations at Sublime's upcoming first facility, which could produce low-carbon cement starting 2026.
