As per Euronews.green, this is the proposal of Iceland-based architects, led by Arnhildur Pálmadóttir of s.ap architects, who will present her project, called Lavaforming, in just a few months. The team now looks at the possible ways to turn dangerous lava into a valuable construction material.

The leading architect explains that, if turned into a sustainable building block, lava can become "capable of lowering atmospheric emissions through its future use as a sustainable building material."

Pálmadóttir added that "in our story, placed in 2150, we have harnessed the lava flow, just as we did with geothermal energy 200 years earlier in Iceland. The main goal of Lavaforming is to show that architecture can be the force that rethinks and shapes a new future with sustainability, innovation and creative thinking."

According to her, the flow of lava from a single volcanic eruption could be enough to raise an entire city without the need to mine for the required materials, which adds its own carbon emission footprint in the long term.

"In our current predicament we need to be bold, think in new ways, look at challenges, and find the right resources", she explained.
