By extending the lifespan of an item, the production (and transport and disposal) of new items is prevented over time.

According to a recent impact report by OLX Group on second hand trade, by choosing second hand you can extend the life of a product, keeping it in use and out of the landfill.

The report includes electronics (smartphones, laptops, televisions, and tablets), cars, motorcycles, books and fashion.

According to the report, if a person sells a phone on one of the platforms managed by OLX, he could save, on average, 52 kg of CO2 emissions, 170 grams of materials, 1 cubic meter of water.

At the same time, selling a tablet through a second hand platform could save 202 kg of CO2 emissions, 4 cubic meters of water and 62 grams of materials, whereas a TV could save up to 317 kg of CO2 emissions, 22 kg of materials and 5 cubic meters of water.

When it comes to selling an already used car, we could save up to 5,484 kg of CO2 emissions, 688 kg of materials and 55 cubic meters of water.

According to the calculations made by OLX, for 2021 the total saved by sellers and buyers on the second hand platforms reached over 34 million tonnes of CO2. To achieve the same savings, 204 million trees would have to be planted for a year.

For 2021, the Impact Report from OLX includes 19 countries for thee car category (Argentina, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and the US) and 8 consumer brands (OLX, OLX Autos, AutoTrader, Autovit, Otomoto, letgo, Standvirtual and webuyanycar.com in the US), and 16 countries (Argentina, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) for the other categories and 2 consumer brands (OLX and letgo).
