According to Reuters, the industry first move done by PepsiCo will apply to Lays and Cheetos snacks and company officials hope that this will become the norm.

By replacing the annual usage of 4.5 million cubic meters of gas with renewable power, the factory will save around 8.500 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

This move should also help with regards to energy prices, as gas prices have increased five times in the Netherlands.

Pepsi spokesman Japo Ouwerkerk said that "if this works, we can replicate it in other locations all around the world."

The company will first replace the 25 megawatts gas-powered boiler at the facility, which should cut emissions in half.

Mitsubishi-owned Eneco, a Dutch energy company, will be supplying the necessary power from its solar and wind farms.

The retrofitting of the factory is expected to be completed before the end of 2023.
